well, i've begun packing. its going well too! i have to say, having a gigantic suitcase is a good idea. my mom hates my huge suitcase, but i've got six blankets in it and its only half-full. ah, nice.
in between loads of laundry, i'm also trying to tidy my house. its yucky lately. so my dishes are just about done, but they're drying then i'll do more. i've also done 3 loads of laundry. 3 probably WASN'T necessary, but i kept finding more stuff that i forgot to wash. wow, so far this is an exciting entry!
anyway, its a funny world we live in. i've had to remove all my buttons from my bag because i'm certain they won't let me on the plane with them, and i can't take a nalgene bottle either b/c "no liquids". i'm also finding myself having to think about what jewelry i'm going to leave behind. i'm going to make a necklace out of shirt buttons to wear while i'm there. its cheap and i was told to not take anything that can't be replaced. i thought about making the necklace on the way there, it would give me something to do in the airport, but they won't allow scissors or needles. its amazing the stuff i have to consider in order to travel, things you won't think would be an issue.
wow, its like there's a big party on msn tonight and everyone is invited. i like it when lots of people are online.
so, am i the last person to hear that britney spears had her baby? did everyone else know this? i'm so out of the celebrity loop.
i'm gonna try my best to not talk about packing nonstop for the next week. however, getting ready for this trip is clearly a big part of my life right now.
here's my thought of the day, the think i spent a good chunk of the day thinking about... i would like to become a more well-balanced person. in some ways i'm very "all or nothing" inspite the fact i think "everything in moderation" is true. i need to learn to not be so black and white, like i said "all or nothing". don't get me wrong, i'm not saying everything is gray, what i am saying is i'd like to not be so extreme. not over indulge. not obsess. not neglect. not avoid. there's an in-between that i've got to get my hands on.
i realized that i've been waiting since birth to find a love that will look and sound like a movie.

you can take a nalgene, as long as it's empty when you go through security and actually board the plane. still the cheapest way to get drinks... fill it with water once you're through security, dump it out right before getting on the plane. fill it on the plane to last your stopovers/ the first while that you're in kenya. can you drink the water there, or do you have to purify it? 's'what i do, anyway.
i was going to say the same thing about the nalgene; i had no trouble with empty sippy cups on the plane... and funnily enough, i had a button on my bag a few times, and perhaps no one noticed but regardless, i still have the button. it's not on my bag anymore, since i realized what had happened, but still, kinda neat to have gotten through security with such an 'illegal' item! happy packing...
:o Lesley, you bring your "6" blankets ?!! :o
If you can just take time for explain me about the "nalgene" and the "button", should be cool. I tried to understand the sense, but I can't :( About the airport, if you have small problem, you can probably go through easily if you do "gentle eyes" ;) (maybe just french expression, sorry if it's the case), anyway... talk to you soon.
well, part of the problem is that i actually lost my nalgene bottle somewhere. i've been thinking about picking up another one, but i can't drink the water in kenya so i kind of think there's no sense buying one now.
hmm, that's funny that they didn't notice you're button dawna. i have a feeling though they may notice my 15. i had to take them off to wash my bag anyway, so i've transfered them to another bag until i get back.
hahaha, vinc' that's so funny about the 6 blankets ;)
i didn't know buttons weren't allowed!! i went through security with like 6 of kevin's little buttons in my pockets. oops!! are they scared you'll poke a hole in the window? i don't get that one. what about safety pins?
and it's still worth it to buy a nalgene. pick up a little bottle of water purifying tablets or drops. it's always a good idea. just make sure that the purified is good for the microbes they got over there.
hmm, i'm just assuming that buttons aren't allowed since they don't allow nail clippers. you could stab someone with one. maybe i'm just being overly cautious, regardless i don't want the kenyans to take my buttons.
ya, i'm still debating back and forth about the nalgene bottle. i'll be drinking bottled water there, so that already comes in a bottle right? frig, a nalgene bottle could be a weapon in itself. i used to walk home at night in toronto with a full nalgene bottle, that could do some serious damage. bam! right to the head...
If you have a giant suitcase, make double-sure about your size and weight limits. It depends on who you're flying with, and some of them have reduced maximums recently. I've had it happen before that we had to 're-pack' in the terminal because a bag was too heavy (by less than a pound!)
nwb
nwb, do i know you?
well anyway, i'm not too concerned, this suitcase has traveled overseas with both melinda and myself in the past. plus, i need a big suitcase because of the blankets i'm taking, and blankets aren't super heavy. thanks for the reminder though :)
here's a link to the up-to-date list of prohibited things in carry-on. nail clippers and tweezers etc are allowed again. i think buttons are fine. :)

aw crap.
"http://www.tc.gc.ca/majorissues/ transportationsecurity/baggage.htm"
it cut it off before. you'll have to cut-and-paste and take out the space because i stink at html and can't remember how to do links. :P
well its alright. i'm really striping down to bare necessities. i think it will be a nice change to "rough it" for a while. no make-up, no jewelry, no "flare". its my choice to do so, no one's making me. i don't want to perpetuate "white" stereotypes, or "flaunt my wealth" in front of a people who received one pair of underwear for christmas from the mission and this was considered a luxury.
you can borrow our nalgene if you decide you want one les!
thanks! i do actually have a litre bottle, but thought i should replace my half-litre bottle. what size is yours?
